From 2015 to 2019, the presenter repeated a study of Summon’s effectiveness at getting users to their primary goal – immediate access to full text online. By 2019, Summon’s Index Enhanced Direct Linking (IEDL) was achieving a success rate of 99%, while the link resolver was hitting the mark 94% of the time. Since then, Summon, like Primo, has added more direct links from search results to full text and just recently improved how Open Access linking works with the indexing of Unpaywall availability (also fully functional in Primo by the time of the conference). In another change since 2019, Ball State has subscribed to LibKey from Third Iron and implemented its Discovery API in Summon. This presentation will discuss results of a new round of linking effectiveness assessment in this dramatically renovated discovery ecosystem, while also discussing some challenges the new wealth of linking options has presented.
